Even with the best of intentions, it is often difficult for most people to put money aside for veterinary emergencies. Our pets are living longer, healthier lives thanks to the advances of veterinary medicine today. We are able to do so many wonderful things for our pets if they become injured or ill but it can come at a price. Veterinary medicine is expensive because it is not subsidised by the government like our healthcare system is (Medicare). Pet insurance gives you piece of mind in times of emergency or unexpected injuries. 

Do your research when it comes to pet insurance as there are many companies out there. You can tailor your insurance to your own needs and get the best cover that suits your circumstances. 

If you have a new puppy or a young dog, this is the best time to get insurance. Your puppy is unlikely to come with any pre existing problems so it will be covered for everything. Also, the statistics show that puppies and young dogs are more likely to injure themselves as their curiosity and clumsiness get them into trouble.

Here are a some pros and cons of pet insurance 

PROS

  • Peace of mind when those large unexpected vet bills arrive 
  • Choose the best treatment option for your pet rather than the most affordable (eg: choosing to fix your dogs cruciate with surgery compared to treating the pain with medication therefore not addressing the actual problem)
  • Helps alleviate the stress of big bills so you can concentrate on what’s best for your pet instead of worrying about how you will afford it.
  • Emergencies and unexpected illnesses can cost into the thousands and pet insurance can save you from having to fund this yourself.

CONS

  • Pet Insurance doesn’t cover everything for example most don’t cover dental work so it’s best to do your research to find a cover that suits your needs 
  • Pre existing conditions are not covered
  • Cover is limited for senior pets if taken out after they are 9 years of age.
  • Some conditions have sub limits such as Cruciate ligament repairs which doesn’t cover the full amount of the bill.

We think pet insurance is worth it if it gives your pets a chance to live their best lives because at the end of the day, that’s what we are all about.
