Here is our second ‘Get to know our staff’ profile and it’s from the fabulous Pip (Vet and Co-Owner of HBVC).

How long have you been a vet?
In December, I will have been graduated for 30yrs.

How long have you been at Hobsons Bay Vet Clinic?
David and I bought HBVC 13 years ago.

What do you love the most about your job?
I love helping animals. To help them return to health and then to maintain it. I am passionate about animal welfare and working with owners to ensure their pets are both physically and psychologically looked after. One of the privileges of working in a clinic long term is sharing the journey of a pets life with their humans.

What’s the hardest part of your job?
Definitely euthanasia of a very loved family pet.

Why did you choose this industry?
It chose me. I always wanted to be a vet from the moment I could talk. There really was no other choice.

What do you do as a vet that surprises people the most?
I think the variety of things I do every day and the different hats that I put on…medicine, surgery, grief counselor, team leader, mental health support, computers, rosters, building and equipment maintenance, stock control, business decisions etc etc…It’s never dull and you never know what’s going to turn up.

What do your friends think you do at work?
Fix animals.

Do you have a favourite breed?
Not really… lots of breeds have their pros and cons. It all depends on the individual personality.

What animals you have at home?
For the last 3 years I have lived on a small acerage in Gisborne. This has allowed me to collect more animals! Currently I have 2 dogs, 4 cats, 3 horses and 6 chickens.

What are your interests outside of work?
I ride my horses. Now that my children have grown up, I have time to get back to Dressage riding. I ride most days and also compete on some weekends. I also enjoy doing projects in my garden and spending time with my animals.
