Vaccinations
Vaccination is very important to protect your cat from the potential fatal diseases of feline enteritis and cat flu. Vaccination is also available against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV or feline AIDS – which causes suppression of the cats immune system) FIV is spread by cats via bites so any outdoor cat is at risk.
The usual schedule is
- 6–8 weeks old — 1st vaccination
- 12–14 weeks old — 2nd vaccination
- 14–16 weeks old — 3rd vaccination
- Every 12 months — an annual booster
Each visit includes a full examination and a chance to ask any questions you may have.
Worming
The common worms that affect cats are hook, round and tape. Kittens should be wormed every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks old then every 3 months (seasonally) throughout their life. We can supply products that are safe and effective as well as advise about dose rates and administration. Giving cats pills can be tricky — there is now a spot on wormer Profender — a few drops on the back every 3 months protects your cat from all intestinal worms.
Feeding
A balanced diet is essential for a healthy cat. The easiest way to achieve this is with a reputable commercial food such as Royal Canin . A raw chicken neck or wing given at least 3 times weekly is the best supplement to keep your cats teeth and gums healthy. Always have fresh water available.
Fleas
There are many new safe effective and easy to use products now to control fleas in cats. We recommend Activyl or Advocate applied monthly to the back of the neck. Have a chat to one of our team about the best flea control regime for your cat.
Desexing
Having your cat desexed reduces unwanted and unexpected litters, spraying, roaming and fighting. Both males and females are done at about 5-6 months of age. Your cat comes in the morning and goes home the same evening.
Behaviour
Cats tend to do their own thing but it is very important to keep them in at night. This protects your cat, as most fights and car accidents occur at night, and it helps protect our native wildlife.
