Vaccinations
Puppies usually have a course of three injections, the first given at 6-8 weeks old, the second at 10-12 weeks and the last at 16 weeks of age.
The vaccine protects your pup against parvovirus / distemper / canine hepatitis and canine (kennel) cough. The vaccines we use are safe and effective and, for ongoing protection, need to be given annually.
Worming
Some worms that affect dogs also affect people so worming is essential for both your dogs and family’s health. Pups should be wormed every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old then monthly till 6 months old then 3 monthly throughout their life.
We recommend safe effective wormers such as Drontal or Milbemax
Heartworm
Mosquitoes spread this potentially fatal disease. Prevention is better than cure for this nasty disease. This involves giving a monthly dose of a heartworm prevention drug – see heartworm information sheet.
Diet
Puppies need a balanced diet to grow and thrive. The best and easiest way to achieve this is by basing the diet on a reputable commercial food such as Royal Canin. Raw bones are also very important to keep the teeth and gums healthy.
Desexing
This is usually done at 5-6 months of age and involves a day trip to the surgery. Talk to one of the team about the benefits of desexing your dog.
Training
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks! Well you can, but training puppies is easier. The better trained and socialised your dog is the more fun you will have with them. We run puppy school classes to help you with this. Ask us for more advice about training your puppy.
Remember we are here to help you enjoy your new dog – if you have any questions at all speak to one of our team.
