Taz found herself in trouble after cracking her tooth while eating an antler. I know what you are thinking …OUCH!
Bones, antlers, solid plastic toys and any solid materials are common ways in which dog’s injure their teeth.
Not only are these teeth the most difficult to remove as they have multiple healthy roots despite the trauma to the tooth, but as you can imagine it is very painful.
We always recommend regular raw bones to keep your pet’s teeth clean. However it’s important to feed suitable raw bones for your breed of dog. Large weight bearing bones that are often marketed as ‘dog bones’ are too solid and cause wear down of the tooth as well as cracks just like Taz’s.
For smaller dog’s we recommend chicken necks, chicken wings, lamb ribs or brisket bones several times a week. While larger dogs can have chicken carcasses, lamb necks and kangaroo tails.
Remember to always supervise your pet when giving bones and only feed raw bones as cooked or dehydrated bones splinter causing further issues. The purpose is to chew them down and eat them, not swallow them entire.
Also be aware that if you are giving your pet bones several times a week as recommended, to substitute this in their daily food intake. So if it’s bone day, give less dinner particularly for fatty bones or you will be compromising your pup’s healthy waistline.
